The Cost of a First Device: Hidden Data, In-App Purchases and Bill Shock
Avoid bill shock on your child’s first device: cap data, switch off one-click purchases on iPhone and Android, and explain loot boxes simply.
The price on the box is only the start. Many parents discover the real cost of a first device weeks later: a surprise phone bill, a run of game purchases or a card statement full of small charges.
The good news is that almost all of it can be prevented in one evening.
The three hidden costs
1. Data and contract extras
Streaming video on mobile data can burn through an allowance fast. Some contracts then charge for extra data, premium-rate numbers or roaming abroad.
- Choose a capped SIM or pay-as-you-go plan, so spending stops at the limit.
- Ask your network to bar premium-rate numbers and international roaming.
- Turn on Wi-Fi at home so videos do not use mobile data.
2. In-app purchases
Many “free” games make money from coins, skins and upgrades. Each purchase is small, which is exactly why they add up.
3. Loot boxes, explained simply
A loot box is a mystery prize your child pays for without knowing what is inside. Here is a simple way to explain it: “It is like paying for a lucky dip. Most of the time you do not get the thing you wanted, so the game hopes you will pay again.” Talking about it openly helps children spot the pull for themselves.
Gift cards vs. a saved credit card
Never leave your own card saved on a child’s account. Instead, use app store gift cards or a set monthly allowance. When the balance runs out, it runs out, and your child learns budgeting along the way.
Switch off one-click purchases
On iPhone and iPad
- Set up Family Sharing and turn on Ask to Buy, so every purchase needs your approval.
- In Screen Time, go to Content & Privacy Restrictions and set in-app purchases to “Don’t Allow”.
On Android
- In Google Family Link, set purchase approvals to “All content”.
- In the Play Store, require authentication for every purchase.

Talk about money before it happens
Add a spending rule to your family agreement, for example: “I always ask before buying anything, even if it is free.” Our free family contract template includes this rule ready to use.
Where Young Minds App helps
Spending often happens when children play late or unsupervised. Young Minds App helps you limit the moments when it is most likely:
- Study Mode keeps games closed during homework.
- Bedtime locks the device overnight, when no one is watching.
- Clear routines mean fewer “just one more game” arguments.
