Set Up and Manage Screen Time Modes

Modes help structure your child’s digital day. You can block distractions during study time, allow relaxing content in the evening, or lock everything at bedtime. Each mode customises app and web access based on time of day.

The Young Minds Parent App allows you to create scheduled modes that help your child stay focused, relax, or rest by controlling which apps and websites are accessible at different times. You can choose from predefined options like Study Mode, Wind Down Mode, Screen Free Day, and Bedtime Mode, or create your own Custom Mode.

Each mode also supports Mode-Specific Web Access, giving you control over which websites are allowed or blocked during that time.

Step 1: Open Your Child’s Profile in the Young Minds Parent App

  • In the the Young Minds Parent App, tap on your child’s profile.
  • Select Manage Modes, then tap Add Mode.

Step 2: Add or Select a Mode

  • Tap + Add a Mode to create a new one, or select an existing mode to edit.

Here are the preset options:

  • 📘 Study Mode – only allows educational apps and websites.
  • 🌙 Wind Down Mode – allows music and relaxation apps; blocks web browsing.
  • 🛌 Bedtime Mode – blocks all apps and websites.
  • ✏️ Screen Free Day – blocks all apps and websites.
  • ✏️ Custom Mode – fully configurable for your needs.

Tap Confirm to proceed.

Note: You can modify the settings of all modes according to your needs, similar to Custom Mode described below.

  • For Custom Modes, tap the ✏️ icon to rename it.
2. Add Time Slots
  • Tap Add time slot to set the start time, end time, and days of the week the mode applies.
  • Example: 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday–Friday.

Tap Save.

3. Manage App Access

  • Select which apps are available during the mode.
  • Browse apps grouped by category and tick those you want to allow during this mode.
  • You can also use the search bar to quickly find a specific app.
  • Tap Save to apply your selections.

Note: Per-app access control is currently available only for Android Child devices. This feature is not available when the child’s device is iOS.

Tip: Please ensure you allow Browser Apps if you want your child to be able to browse the internet (for Android Child devices only).

4. Manage Web Access

Tap Manage Web Access and choose how websites are filtered during this mode:

  • Apply Default Web Filtering Rules – uses the settings you’ve defined in the general Web Filtering section.
  • Block All Websites Except – allows access only to selected categories and websites.
    • Categories Tab – choose categories such as Educational, Government, or Search Engines. Only websites within these categories will be accessible.
    • Websites Tab – add specific websites (for example, atomlearning.com) that should be accessible during this mode.

Tip: You can also add specific websites to allow during this time.

Note: Web access requires a supported browser to be enabled in Manage App Access. Currently supported browsers include Google Chrome and Firefox on Android and all browsers on iOS.

Additional Setting for Bedtime Mode on iOS

In Bedtime Mode for iOS child devices, there is an additional setting: Hide Applications on iOS.

When Hide Applications on iOS is enabled in Bedtime Mode, all apps with an age rating of 4+ are hidden from the iPhone and iPad devices for the duration of the mode.

Please note:

  • When the mode ends, apps reappear but are re-organised in alphabetical order.
  • Any folders your child created are removed.
  • All apps are moved to the Home Screen (no folders).

If your child relies on folders to organise their apps, we do not recommend using Hide Applications, as it will remove the folder structure.

Step 4: Modify or Remove a Mode
  • To edit a mode, tap the arrow icon next to it.
  • You can change time slots, rename it, adjust apps/websites, or delete the mode.

Once created, you can return to this screen to:

  • enable or disable a mode
  • edit the mode name (for Custom Mode)
  • change or add time slots
  • adjust allowed apps and websites
  • delete the mode
Examples of How Modes Can Be Used

Modes can be used to support different parts of your child’s daily routine. For example:

  • Study Mode – used after school from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Wind Down Mode – used before bedtime from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM
  • Bedtime Mode – used overnight from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM
  • Custom Mode – used on weekends or for flexible time schedules
Why Use Modes?

Modes are your day-to-day tools for helping your child stay focused, rested, or relaxed - without needing to micromanage their device use. Start with a simple setup, then adapt it as your family’s routine evolves.
