Why I Built Young Minds App: Protection Isn't Enough
Are we asking the wrong questions about children and technology? The founder of Young Minds App on the North Star behind every feature: raising children who can navigate the digital world confidently and independently.

In a startup, your WHY is your North Star. It shapes what you build, the decisions you make and, perhaps most importantly, what you choose not to build.
When I started Young Minds App, I kept coming back to one question: are we asking the wrong questions about children and technology?
The questions every parent asks
As parents, we spend so much time asking:
- How do we limit screen time?
- How do we block harmful content?
- How do we keep children away from online risks?
- How do we control what they do on their devices?
These are important questions. But they're not the most important ones.
The questions we should be asking
What if we started asking how to set our children up for success in a digital world?
- How do we help them develop good judgement?
- How do we help them build healthy habits?
- How do we teach them to recognise manipulation?
- How do we help them understand technology rather than simply consume it?
How do we prepare them to navigate a world shaped by AI, social media and technologies that haven't even been invented yet?
That shift in thinking became the WHY behind Young Minds App.
Protection is the start, not the finish
Of course, children need protection. But protection alone doesn't prepare them for independence.
And that's where our North Star comes in. Every feature we build, every product decision we make, comes back to the same question:
Does this help parents raise children who can navigate the digital world confidently and independently?
Because the goal was never to control our children.
It was to set them up for success. 💚
